Kanopy’s Without Borders Celebrating the Dance Legacy of José Limón honors Mexican born José Limón who electrified the world as one of the 20th century’s most influential dance makers. In its 50th season, Kanopy is proud to recognize Limón, a stellar talent in the constellation of powerful immigrant voices that have shaped our cultural landscape.

Kanopy lights up the stage with Winter Fantasia Reimagined, celebrating a mosaic of cultural traditions. Delight in the lure of mythical places, and ancient Nordic legends, travel to India for a festive Gujarati folk dance, and swing to the joyful and fancy footwork inspired by Leonard Berstein’s “On the Town”.

Kanopy Dance Guest Stars in the Madison Opera Production of Postcard from Morocco by Dominick Argento.

A Moroccan train station becomes a crossroad of dreams in this witty and touching entertainment about strangers, secrets, and stories. Argento’s sparkling score is by turns romantic, mysterious, dramatic, and delightfully unhinged in this 90-minute work that is richly human and thoroughly theatrical. Kanopy Dance joins Madison Opera in a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary – and every suitcase holds a story. Kanopy’s Robert E. Cleary is featured as the “Puppet Master” in this production.

“Renascence”, a “love letter to nature”, that debuted at WCO’s Masterworks last spring takes center stage. Then six songs… American Folk, Italian Baroque, and Sensual Jazz Rhythms…performed to original choreography, speak to nature and trials of personal love.

Watch the next generation of dancers ignite the stage with new expressions and fresh ideas. In a special collaboration, pre-professional students from Central Midwest Ballet Academy join Kanopy Dance Academy’s pre-professional trainees Kanopy 2, in a newly imagined work.

Kanopy Dance has been invited to guest star in the Minnesota Dance Festival, produced by Ballet Minnesota, and a long-standing celebration of movement, culture, and artistic exploration. Coming in May 2027, the Festival marks its 38th year, continuing a celebrated tradition of bringing together highly talented dance companies and artists representing a wide range of ethnic backgrounds and dance genres.
